Electrohomeopathy Gold or Dust ?
RESEARCH ARTICLE BY DR DEBASISH KUNDU
Its an attempt to bring together some facts & figures related to the medical system invented by Count Cesare Mattei of Riola,Bologna,Italy.
1)In the article "The Basic Principles of Homeopathy" by Prof.George Vithoulkas, Director , International Academy of Homeopathy, Athens, Greece, the W.H.O. authority on Homeopathy, it is written that Electrohomeopathy is one branch of Homeopathy (www.vithoulkas.com).
2)Count Cesar Mattei is described as homeopath by the "Homeopathy International of France (www.homeoint.org / photo / photom.htm)
3)In the book "Keynotes of Homoeopathic Materia Medica by Dr.H.C.Allen published by "Economic Homeo Pharmacy" of Calcutta, in the chapter " Specific Medicines" it is written that in the later part of 18th century some Homeopaths of Europe established polypharmacy of homeopathic tinctures in low potencies and it’s called Electric School of Homeopathy.
4)In the book "Lectures on Materia Medica by James Tyler Kent acknowledgments are given to Electic School of Homeopathy while discussing 'Phytolacca'. In the book "Materia Medica" by Dr.W.Boericke, acknowledgments are given to Electic School of Homeopathy while discussing 'Echinacea'.
5)In the book "The Hidden Roots: A History of Homeopathy in Northern, Central and Eastern Europe" by Prof.. Dr. Robert Jütte, Director of the Institute of History of Medicine Foundation Robert Bosch in Germany is written that Dr Alexander Rosendorff (1871 - 1963) became "acquainted with Electrohomeopathy" when he met Cesare Mattei. The signboard which he had displayed in 1920 outside his practice in Tallinn, Waldstraße, however, said: 'Homeopath'. 6)In the book "The essay on history of Homeopathy in Latvia" Marina Afanasieva, Medical Dept., Vice-President of LMHI of Latvia, published by the "Liga Medicorum Homoeopathica Internationalis," France has written a significant part on Mr.Feliks Lukin ( 1875-1934) that he learned Elettromeopatia from Dr.Rosendorf in Tallinn (Estonia) and practiced in France but with the name Homeopathy. 7)Bärbel Tschech (Dip. biologist) in her article : A Discussion of Complex Homeopathic Remedies ,translation by Siegfried Letzel, published in Hpathy Ezine - July, 2007 Zimpel and Mattei have been described as homeopaths. 8)In the famous homeopathic website www.hpathy.com , the book "Vade Mecum of the Electrohomeopathy by Count Cesare Mattei" is listed under Homeopathic category.
9)In the Official Homeopathic Pharmacopoeias of Germany and America, published by the respective Governments, the Spagyric Homeopathy or Electrohomeopathy is incorporated. 10)Dr.Adrian Starchild, Vice President of the American Nutritional Medical Association, in its article "Electro Homeopathy: Gold or Dust" writes that the Electrohomeopathy medicine is Spagyric Homeopathy. 11)Laboratories Soluna GMBH,Germany website and publications referred Electro Homeopathy of Cesare Mattei as Spagyric Homeopathy. They also sell total range of Electro Homeopathic Medicines formulated and prepared exclusively by Soluna Lab.
12)The Electrohomeopathy is defined one branch of the Homeopathy also in Hungary and Germany opined by Dr.Katalin Soltesz, Dept.of Complementary Medicines, Ministry of Welfare, Budapest, Hungary, and Dr. IVUwe Zind Chairman, ISO-Arzenimittel GMBH , Regensburg, Germany. 13)Dr.Fabio R. Ambrosi, Ex-Director, Department of Natural Medicines of the Universita Internazionale Della Nouva Medicina, Milan, Italy says that since 1930’s the Electrohomeopathic products are recognized in Italy, Germany and other countries in Europe as Homeopathic products and although the basic principle and pharmaceutical procedures differ, according to law falls within the homeopathic group. 14) Prof.Dan Kenner, Board of Governors, National Health Federation,U.S.A., Consultant,USC School of Pharmacy and Graduate training in Phytotherapy and Pharmacognosy with network of physicians, pharmacists and laboratories in La Société Française d'Endobiogénie et Médecine, opined that Mattei Spagyrics falls within the homeopathic group. 15)In the article ‘Immunology and Homeopathy’ by Paolo Bellavite, Anita Conforti, Valeria Piasere and Riccardo Ortolani published in Evidance Based Complementary and Alternative Medicines, Oxford Journals Vol 2, No.4 Electro Homeopathy is referred to as 'homeopathic' innovations. 16)Hahnemann College of Homeopathy,London, referred Electro Homeopathy as Spagyric Homeopathy (http://www.hchuk.com/3.html). 16) In the book ‘Homeopathic Pharmacy’ by Dr.T.C.Mondal, Lecturer, D. N. De Homoeopathic Medical College & Hospital, Kolkata, in Chapter 21 describes the process of Electro-Homoeo Pharmacopoeia along with the production of Spargical "Zimpel". 16) In the article ‘Electro Homeopathy in comparison to Hahnemannian Homeopathy’ by Prof.Malik A.K.Awan,President,ANMA Inc. U.S.A., it is written that during the early 1900’s the quest for elimination of medical quackery took hold and the “witch hunt” progressed from the U.S. to other countries. Cesare Mattei fought the allopathic trust until the day he departed in 1896, and shortly afterwards at the early 1900’s the university in the United Kingdom had been closed on authority of the Royal Education System on the premise that the medical system they were teaching did not merit value. 15) Prof.Axel Helmstadter Lecturer, History of Science and Pharmacy, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University, Frankfurt, Germany and author of ‘Spagyrische Arzneimittel’ however strongly objects any idea to revive Electrohomeopathy dismissing the Electro Homeopathy as pure quackery. 16) In 'Homeopathic Thesaurus' published by European Committee for Homeopathy (2007), page 96, the following is written: ‘ELECTROHOMEOPATHY SN Therapy using certain homeopathic drugs developed by Cesare Mattei, including some which he called Electricities due to the drugs' speed of action when applied to the affected part. Do not confuse with spagyrik.’ 16)Science Museum,London exhibits Mattei’s products with the following notes: Mattei's electro-homeopathic treatments, Bologna, Italy, 1871-1885: Cesare Mattei, an Italian count, was interested in homeopathy. Mattei believed that fermented plants gave off ‘electrical’ energy that could be used to cure illness. He also believed that every illness had a cure provided in the vegetable kingdom by God. He began to develop his system from 1849. The large bottles are labelled ”Red”, ”Green”, “White”, “Yellow” and “Blue” so the actual ingredients remained a secret. Ointments were made up with ingredients from the small and large bottles. The vial labelled “Canceroso 5” was used for bruises, cancers, chilblains, hair loss, skin diseases and varicose veins, among other conditions. Although dismissed by the medical profession as quackery, Mattei’s system was popular. It formed part of the treatment at St Saviour’s Cancer Hospital in London from 1873. However, by the 1930s Mattei’s ideas were generally dismissed. (Source: Science Museum, London, http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/broughttolife/objects/display.aspx?id=4968) 16)Several authorities opined that since Alchemy was referred at that time as 'black art' or ‘witchcraft’ , so, Mattei simply avoided making any direct references to alchemy, even now alchemy is not accepted by the conventional medicine as Science, although, we know alchemy is the mother of modern chemistry and in both Ayurveda and Homeopathy some alchemical methods are incorporated, like for making Rasasindura in Ayurveda and Hepar sulph in homeopathy, for example. See “ Hahnemann’s debt to Alchemy”by Peter Morrell , “Alchemy and Science” by Lucia K. B. Hall , also, “Homeopathy: From Alchemy To Medicine” by Elizabeth Danciger, Homoeopathy and Medical Alchemy by Whitney, Jerome, The Homoeopath 57, April 1995, pp405-6 , But, Mattei simply avoided making any direct references to alchemy in his writings, however, in “Vade Mecum” he wrote, ‘it would seem to be alchemy if he explains what vegetal electricity really consists’, also, the instruments on exhibition at Archivio Museo Cesare Mattei,Bologna, clearly indicates the genre of the productions at Mattei’s laboratory, its alchemical –spagyrical preparations. That’s actually the ‘secret’ of Mattei Remedies. So then what the Mattei family inherited? The ‘Legacy’ of being the successor of Count Cesare Mattei. 17) As regards Alchemy, Why was Alchemy not considered Science? Alchemy was a blend of Pseudoscience, magic, and mystical Philosophy. One example, time of collection of medicinal herbs as per modern pharmaceutical science and botany is their flowering season, but alchemist choose this time as according to mystic astrological calculations!! Today the process of changing one fundamental substance into another is called Nuclear Physics. In the generation of Enriched nuclear fuels one basic substance will "miraculously" change into another. As per The Skeptic's Dictionary by Robert Todd Caroll, Alchemy is an occult art and pseudoscience. Its practitioners' main goals have been 1. to turn base metals (like lead or copper) into precious metals (like gold or silver) (the transmutation motif); 2. to create an elixir or potion or metal which could cure all ills (the medical motif), and 3. discover an elixir which would lead to immortality (the transcendence motif). The magical substance that was to transmute metals, to be the universal panacea and to serve as the key to immortality was called the philosopher's stone. Alchemy is based on the belief that there are four basic elements : fire, air, earth and water, and three essentials: salt, sulfur and mercury. Great symbolic and metaphysical systems have been built from these seven pillars of alchemy. Ancient Chinese and Egyptian occult literature are said to be the foundation upon which alchemy is based. Alchemy was very popular in medieval Europe where one of the most sacred books of the alchemists was allegedly written by the Egyptian god Thoth, known as Hermes Trismegistus (Hermes, the thrice-great, was the Greek god who served as a messenger and delivered the souls of the dead to Hades.) In 1455, a manuscript entitled Corpus Hermeticum began circulating in Florence, Italy. It was allegedly a compilation of the alchemical, astrological and magical knowledge of the Egyptian god. However, it is now known that the work was of European origin and dates from somewhat after the time Thoth prospered. The work is full of magic spells and incantations and other useless occult notions. Today, the transmutation motif is largely ignored, while the transcendence and medical motifs are still going strong in areas such as homeopathy and aromatherapy. Many modern alchemists combine their occult art with astrology, acupuncture, hypnosis and a wide variety of New Age spiritual quests. Unlike modern chemistry, which grew out of alchemy, the ancient art is heavily spiritual. Alchemists may have been the first ones to try out their ideas by devising experiments, but because of their intensely metaphysical purposes and beliefs, alchemists did not develop modern scientific methods. Alchemy never separated itself from the supernatural, the magical and the superstitious. Perhaps that is why it is still popular, even though it has accomplished practically nothing of lasting value. Alchemists never transmuted metals, never found a panacea, and never discovered the fountain of youth. Some alchemists did make contributions to the advancement of knowledge, however. For example, Paracelsus (1493-1541) introduced the concept of disease to medicine. He rejected the notion that disease is a matter of imbalance or disharmony in the body, even though this view is favored by modern alchemists. Instead, Paracelsus maintained that disease is caused by agents outside of the body which attack it. He recommended various chemicals to fight disease. Alchemy continues to prosper among the anti-scientific. Robin Murphy, for example, has joined alchemy with homeopathy, qigong and astrology to create his own brand of alternative medicine. The Alchemical Institute advertises Alchemical Hypnotherapy for those seeking a New Age empowerment therapy based on occult pseudoscience. The so called Alchemically produced essences never had undergone any evidence based clinical trials. In most countries like in Australia, New Zealand , besides, Europe and USA these are sold as nutritional supplements. According to Adam Mclain of Alchemy Lab, Alchemical tinctures never gone under any scientific provings. These are made in small quantities in small labs and unlike homeopathy not widely consumed. 18) Father Muller the ambassador of Count Mattei to India who laid the fouondations for Father Muller Charitables institutions in Cananady , Mangalore, India is now emerged one of the biggest homeopathic teaching institutions in India, the pharmacy attached to the institution sells Electro Homeopathic Specialities as homeopathic medicines. 19) Twenteeth Century witnessed efforts of some jealous ‘inheritors’ of Count Cesare Mattei from Indian subcontinent to revive Electrohomeopathy as a full fledged system of medicine, although, the concerned governments opposed to that idea, claiming it has no scientific basis. Since it even failed to qualify the basic criteria laid down by the authorities for recognition. Bashir Ahmad Mir, an unemployed Kashmiri electro homeopath who put himself on fire to protest a lack of jobs for electro homeopaths as their medical degrees are not recognized by the Indian Medical Council, in Srinagar, India, Tuesday, May 19, 2009, reports The Mirror,U.K. (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/05/20/quack-doctor-in-fire-protest-115875-21373447/)
